Thesis Abstract
Questions asked at the beginning of this study: What steps can museums take to create a daily environment that is inclusive for autistic individuals with sensory issues? What changes should museums make to achieve this inclusion? This study introduces what Autism Spectrum Disorder is and the different aspects. While taking a look at how museums can become more inclusionary through many aspects, from staff training to design elements to community conversations. To give this thesis a more human voice, museum interviews and family with Autism Spectrum Disorder interviews were
conducted, bringing to light the experiences and ways in which they can come together to create an inclusive museum for its community and visitors. The conclusion of this study gives a list of practices, needs and wants, and a visual poster of Inclusionary design.
